At 5,300' elevation, this quiet little campsite is perfect for a weekend getaway. The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail is nearby. Hike-in only, first come - first served campsites. Campfire rings are provided. A CA campfire permit is required to operate backpack stove or equivalent heating device and may be obtained at any Forest Service office. *Stream water at site (treat before using). However, water flow may be low or non-existent due to reduced rainfall.
The pit toilets may or may not be in use, however, please do not use as a trash disposal. Remember, pack it in and pack it out.
I have chosen this as a kid friendly hike due to its short distance when following the road up until the pavement ends, from there its a short walk to camp. As the kids get older, or if they're over 7, you can always take the PCT route and make them feel super cool that they hiked a section of one of the most famous trails in America
There is plenty to do here, you can teach them how to filter water, have them collect firewood (when campfires are allowed again) discover the different insects around, check out the tadpoles, and of course, have them tell some scary stories at night. I would like to add that one should always be aware of the wildlife in the area, that includes snakes, watch where you step and always bear proof your campsite before bedtime.
From the 210 Freeway in La Canada, go 28 miles north on CA 2, then 5.5 miles west of Three Points on the Santa Clara Divide Road (3N17) until the paved road ends, its a 1/4 mile hike in from the parking lot to camp, this is usually the road I take when going with kids. For a longer hiking experience you can get on the PCT and go N for around 3.5 miles and the campsite will be to the right on the trail
